Enhancing Your PageRank

Enhancing Your PageRank

Below are suggestions for publicizing your website — and improving its PageRank — based on our experience getting the word out about Google Information.

Include useful high-quality information on your website.

Create articles that customers want and will share with others.

Submit your website to various web internet directories and referrals sites.

A web index “specializes in connecting to other web sites and categorizing those hyperlinks,” according to HighSearchRanking.com.

Post your website URL (web address) to well-known web internet directories such as Open Directory Project (ODP), Yahoo!, and LookSmart. Also publish your URL to online referrals, e.g., Wikipedia, industry-specific expert sites, blogs, etc.

Publicize your website to everyone with whom you communicate.

Add your website URL, e.g., www.googleguide.com, to every piece of communication you initiate. The TechSoup (The Technology Place for Nonprofits) content, Publicizing Your Web Site: Getting the message out there, recommends that “your Web deal with should be detailed everywhere that your phone/fax number and mailing deal with,” e.g.,

    Business cards
    Letterhead
    Newsletters
    Brochures
    Media Releases
    Fax cover sheets
    Email signatures

Write a publication and send it out.

Inform people what’s new or noteworthy on your website. The publication will remind people about your website and motivate them to trip to like articles.

Provide a Rich Site Summary (RSS).

RSS is also known as Really Simple Syndication. JISC describes RSS as “a lightweight XML format for distributing news statements and other articles on the Web.”

In inclusion to making it easy for other sites to spread your statements and articles, your RSS feed will be indexed by well-known Weblog look for applications, such as Technorati, BlogSearch, and Ask.com Bloglines.

Ask other high-quality sites to backlink to your website.

Getting other “good” sites to weblink to yours usually helps your website’s PageRank and position on Google.

Note: If your website hyperlinks to delisted sites, your website might also be removed from Google’s catalog.

Provide motivation for extremely rated sites to weblink to yours.

Getting extremely rated sites to weblink to yours will enhance your position more than getting many badly rated sites to weblink to yours.

Note: If Google thinks that you have traded hyperlinks with other sites for the sole purpose of enhancing position, it might penalize or blacklist your website.

Check out a website before you backlink.

When you receive a request for a weblink, check the website before you backlink. Is it a website worthy of your weblink, i.e., vote of confidence? Would a weblink be of value to your page’s visitors?

Tell the press about your website.

Telling the press may not get your website advertising. After making Google Information live, I e-mailed local, nationwide, and international press and got a poor response to our advertising.

Next I e-mailed journalists who specialize in look for applications, but again few had written articles about Google Information.

Then I e-mailed reviewers of books on using Google. A handful responded. Some had written that Google Information was for novices; others had written that Google Information was tailored for innovative customers. Wanting to create Google Information attract beginners and experts alike, I indicated sections that would attract particular customers, e.g.,

If you have little or no experience with Google, read on. Otherwise, miss to the next section, titled “Go to the First Result.”
We recommend that you miss ahead to Part II: Understanding Search Outcomes unless you are an experienced Google user or you want to know how to use Google’s innovative operators.

After several months of emailing potential customers and posting to sites, libraries, schools, and customers began connecting to Google Information.

I tried again to get nationwide press coverage by contacting John Markoff from the New York Times. After a few attempts, I was quoted in an content about Search Website Wars and afterwards Google Information got over 50,000 unique visitors/day for the following week and guests has been good ever since.

On the basis of a suggestion from Matt Vance, I created the Google Information 'cheat' Piece and announced it on Slashdot, which generated great advertising, along with a few flames; within 24 hours, the 'cheat' Piece went from being rated so badly I couldn’t even discover it to being rated #2 (after Google’s cheat sheet).
Keep your website up.

If your website is not accessible for an longer timeframe of time, Google may reduce the position of your website.

Give away articles.

I publish Google Information under a Creative Commons License to enable others to copy, spread, and create derivative works, as long as they give Nancy Blachman credit and weblink to Google Information.

If most of your website articles is commercial — e.g., webpages about your business — consider adding other webpages with useful information for the public. For example, if you sell bicycles, consist of webpages or your website about bike paths, bike gear, or with tips on bicycling. Promote these and motivate others to weblink to them.

Translate your website into languages.

If you never know a language, discover others that do. Erik Hoy, a librarian, e-mailed me asking if he could use some material from Google Information on Copenhagen Main Library’s website. I suggested that he convert the whole thing into Danish, which he did.

Recently Google Information was translated into Hebrew.

Search Google for your website.
Instead of entering your URL into your browser, look for Google for your website. Google is more apt to enhance the position of a website that customers seek and check out than one that gets no guests from Google.

When I first made this website publicly available, Google Information wasn’t in the first 100 sites on searches for [ Google guide ]. Thanks to the sites that linked to Google Information and customers who clicked on Google Information in their look for results, Google Information is in the top ten recent results for many queries that relate to the articles of the website. Being detailed so extremely on Google has improved the guests flow to Google Information.

Note: For the top rated website, Google sometimes includes useful hyperlinks from within that website.

Google such as useful hyperlinks from within site

Avoid devious methods to enhance your position.

If Google thinks that you are trying to deceive it web crawler and thus its customers by such as hidden text, misleading or repeated words, webpages that never match your sites description, deceptive redirects, duplicate website or webpages, or other disingenuous methods, then Google may delist your website from its catalog.

And finally…

In inclusion to considering the number of hyperlinks to your web page and the position of the connecting web page, to compute a page’s PageRank, Google considers hundreds of aspects including

how fast a website is gaining links
    how long the hyperlinks persist
when your website acquired the links
the ctr (CTR) of Google’s look for results, cached webpages, favorites on the Google Toolbar
the stickiness of your website (i.e., the effectiveness of your website in retaining individual users)

These aspects and many others are described in the content “Great Site Ranking in Google The Secret’s Out” on Buzzle.com.

Google periodically changes how it calculates a page’s significance, thereby resulting in shifts in rankings, known as a Google Dance. Google Guide’s placement in Google’s look for results sometimes changes when Google modifies or enhances their indexing algorithms.

I never try to keep up with the latest seo tricks. Instead I strive to create searching Google easier by educating customers about Google services, capabilities, and features. When I am successful, sites weblink to Google Information webpages and increase their ranks and significance to Google.
